Star of the Bluegrass

The Herman Brood of bluegrass, they call him. On his 2015 album "The Old World," which received many rave reviews from the media, Herman Brock Jr. from Terneuzen was inspired by stories his father and grandfather told him as a young boy. About Zeeland natives who went to America by boat in the 1920s, in search of a better life, and ended up returning with a lot of money. With lyrics about legends from Zeeland, he effectively brought back to The Old World an overseas genre that had evolved into bluegrass in The Promised Land through the influences of instruments and folk music brought by Europeans. On "Devianto" (2022), bluegrass is again the starting point, but incorporates influences from broader musical directions. The songs are recorded in a basic lineup of double bass, acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin and violin, but including the hang (Swiss hand pan), Irish flute, Bodhrán (Irish drum), Bouzouki (Greek stringed instrument), Cajón (Peruvian percussion instrument), accordion, trumpet, coconuts and even the clinking of silver guilders, Brock has infused multiple elements of global musical history into his songs. On stage, Herman Brock Jr. brings his albums to life with fire and conviction. Coupled with the enthusiastic and entertaining presentation, it makes his shows effortlessly engaging from start to finish.
