The School Band
One of Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival's most cherished traditions is the opening performance by the bluegrass bands of local primary schools Juliana and Quadratum. After months of rehearsals, students from Rotterdam's Oude Noorden neighbourhood take to the Main Stage to officially open the festival.
What started as a small initiative has grown into an essential part of the festival. Each year, students receive music lessons from professional bluegrass musicians, learn to play instruments and form their own bands.
The project gives local children the opportunity to experience music education first hand and discover the joy of making music together. The live performance at the festival is the highlight of the programme, showcasing not only the students' musical talents, but also the creativity and diversity of the neighbourhood.
From audience members to performers, this is where the next generation of Rotterdam bluegrass musicians gets its start.
