If you saw the fabulous Idumea Quartet play at the Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival in 2019, you have already met one of the members of The Wanton String Band. Singer and fiddle player Nathan Bontrager got in touch with the other members of the band by chance in Istanbul. Bontrager introduced the musicians, with very diverse backgrounds in Celtic folk, indie pop, electro and renaissance music, to the world of old-time fiddle. Stuart Graham (bouzouki, vocals), Chris Jones (mandolin), Ewan Macdonald (fiddle), Richard O'Flynn (drums, synths, vocals) and Jess Whelligan (cello, vocals) became obsessed with Bontrager's beautiful melodies, rich string sound and hypnotic repetitive sounds, fusing them with their own influences, resulting in a completely unique interpretation of the canon of old-time. One may call the result ecstatic; rooted in tradition, but also innovative and extremely danceable. The curbstones on the Noordplein have already been polished, so allow yourself to move freely to the irresistible pulse of The Wanton String Band.
