Take a home-made one-string bass, also known as a Babatone, a foot drum strung with cowhide, a beat-down four-string guitar and two harmonically merging voices and voilà, you have Madalitso Band from Malawi in Africa. With this duo, the Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival has acquired something very special. For years they played on the streets of Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, until they were discovered by a local producer. Since then, they have released a number of albums and have also played abroad on renowned stages and festivals. Two cool guys who play traditional African folk music on improvised instruments and get every audience laughing, cheering, clapping and dancing. Surely no one can resist that?
