The Rotterdam Bluegrass Festival is all about expanding horizons and encouraging artists to do the same. This is why we created MaMiMa, a project in which two artists from different geographical and musical backgrounds enter into a one-time collaboration. We asked Moroccan banjo player Hassan Wargui and Aaron Jonah Lewis, a banjo and fiddle player from America, to cross their stringed swords. Lewis is extremely gifted and is known as one of the very few musicians capable of forging captivating bridges between classical banjo playing from the 19th century - the era of sheet music - and that of the 20th century, when recording technology emerged. He is always looking for new musical challenges in the fields of bluegrass, old-time, jazz and ragtime. In Hassan Wargui we have found an excellent sparring partner for him.
