The American Songster. Ontelbare artiesten die zich deze bijnaam maar wat graag zouden toe-eigenen, maar er is er maar één die de titel daadwerkelijk mag dragen: Dom Flemons. Een eervolle bijnaam die de oorspronkelijk uit Phoenix afkomstige en momenteel in Chicago woonachtige artiest verdiend heeft door als een moderne Alan Lomax een 100 jaar omvattende muziekgeschiedenis van Amerikaanse folkliedjes te conserveren. Met het wezenlijke verschil ten opzichte van de legendarische archivaris dat Flemons het werk niet enkel vastlegt, maar ook weer tot leven brengt door de museale muziek zelf op te nemen, uit te brengen en live te spelen. Daarvoor is hij erkend met een Grammy Award en is hij twee keer genomineerd geweest voor een Emmy Award. Als je dit al indrukwekkend vindt, wat het natuurlijk ook is, dan zet je nog maar eens schrap. Flemons is namelijk songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, acteur, slamdichter, muziekwetenschapper, historicus en platenverzamelaar. Hij staat te boek als autoriteit wat betreft het bespelen van instrumenten als banjo, gitaar, mondharmonica, jug, percussie, de Afro-Amerikaanse panfluit, pijperfluit en rhythm bones. Daarnaast is hij host van The American Songster Radio Show op WSM Radio in Nashville en heeft hij een graad als Doctor of Humane Letters aan de Northern Arizona University. Hoe bijzonder is het dat deze zeer onderlegde artiest, muzikale verhalenverteller en educatief entertainer straks op ons Noordplein te zien zal zijn.

Join The American Songster, Dom Flemons, for a masterclass through his Smithsonian Folkways album Black Cowboys.

As a resolute preservationist, storyteller and instrumentalist, Dom Flemons has long set himself apart by finding under-accessed folk songs and making them live again. He is deeply dedicated to creatively showcasing African American traditional music. Smithsonian Folkways is a nonprofit record label dedicated to supporting cultural diversity and increased understanding among peoples through the documentation, preservation, and dissemination of sound.

‘Black Cowboys’ is the first album of its kind and pays tribute to the music, culture, and the complex history of the golden era of the Wild West and re-analyzes this important part of the American identity. The songs and poems featured on the album take the listener on an illuminating journey from the trails to the rails of the Old West. In this masterclass, Dom will take us on a deep dive into a few of these songs, stories, his research and the current black country phenomenon taking place throughout American pop culture.
